Introduction:
SmCo magnets represent the latest generation of magnetic materials. They are developed over 40 years ago and introduced the era of permanent magnet motors. At that time, these rare earth metals were very expensive. During the 1980s, SmCo material was increasingly replaced by NdFeB magnets. Due to the dramatic price rise in the rare earths neodymium and dysprosium (Nd/Dy), this material has now regained its popularity in applications at higher temperatures (150°C – 200°C). However, there are limits set on the material with regard to the maximum remanence. Two major types of SmCo magnets are available, 1:5 type (SmCo5) and 2:17 type (Sm2Co17). SmCo magnets have super high magnetic properties and temperature properties.
Advantage:
Use of these magnets is conditioned by the temperature in a wide range running from 250ºC to 350ºC and their Curie temperature can be as high as 710 to 880 °C. Therefore, SmCo magnet has the best magnetic stability due to the superior resistance to high temperature. SmCo magnets are characterized by very high corrosion resistance, no coating required for surface protection.
Feature:
A disadvantage of SmCo magnets is the marked brittleness of the material – a factor which must be particularly taken into account during processing. The magnets are galvanized or coated by cathodic electrodeposition for certain applications.
Application:
In areas high operating temperature, high corrosion and oxidation resistance are crucial. Such as Electronic magnetron, Magnetic transmission, Magnetic treatment, Magnistor, etc.
All stated values were determined using standard samples according IEC 60404-5. The following specifications serve as reference values and may differ. The max. operating temperature is
dependent on the magnet dimesion and the specific application. For more information please
